Today is a day where we journal. All the challenge days written in yellow are coding days, and the days written in white are mindset shift days.
How much do you know about the Black Codes of 1865? You may recall that the project name comes from this period in time. And the goal is to erase the mindset that Black Codes or Black Laws cultivated.
Grab your journal and write down your thoughts and feelings about the Black Codes. Do a little research if you need more insight. Here is some writing prompts and probing questions to help with your journal entry.
Questions:
- What is your understanding of the Black Codes or Black Laws?
- How did the Black Code seek to prevent African Americans from obtaining good employment?
- Do you see any parallels with the Black Codes and the current job market? What about the role of African Americans in the tech industry?
Prompt(s)
- Imagine that you were alive during 1865 during the Black Codes era. Describe a typical day.
- Imagine you owned a small library during the time, what types of books would you house?
The journal entry today will help us to remember the past and the struggles African Americans faced during this time of heightened white supremacy. You may even notice a few parallels between 1865 and 2021.
In sum, journaling will play a deep role during this challenge for the next 28 days. Feel free to write any additional thoughts on days that aren’t designated as mindset shift days. That is it for today, see you tomorrow for day 3!
